With nearly 653,740 tons of clothes sent to landfill every year, textile recycling technology has immense scope where polyester is concerned. Recycled polyester is made from PET. PET is used in making plastic water bottles and recycling it into recycled polyester keeps it away from landfills. Closed loop manufacturing processes are being adopted by more and more manufacturers today, who refine old polyester into new raw material for garments. This technology has nominal waste, consumes limited energy and is environment-friendly.
Cotton is a wonderful fabric, but sometimes, it is produced in a way that negatively impacts the environment. Recycled polyester does not need any land or large amounts of water for production, unlike cotton. When compared to silk, recycled polyester does not harm any animals.
This made them the first outdoor clothing producer to start using recycled polyester. The company has also been offering take back schemes for worn out garments, encouraging consumers not to buy new clothes.
All products offered by the company are manufactured entirely from recycled fabrics. Like Patagonia, the organization also calls on consumers to return old surf shorts for recycle and reuse, giving a discount on the new garments bought.
Goldsworthy, working hand in hand David Telfer, a talented zero waste designer and Worn Again, is designing a blue print for the production of a Zero Waste Dress. The polyester garment will allow for recycling and still deliver high quality.
